Pert Near Sandstone, a Minnesota old-time string band, plays First Avenue with Feed the Dog, Buffalo Galaxy and Molly Brandt.
Pert Near Sandstone play the First Avenue Mainroom on Saturday, December 5, with Feed the Dog, Buffalo Galaxy and Molly Brandt opening. It's a hometown show for a band that's been a part of the Minnesota acoustic scene for about twenty years, and they're bringing three other acts along for the bill.
The four songwriters grew up near the sandstone river bluffs of St. Paul, and they've spent two decades crossing old-time instrumentation with a contemporary sensibility. That sound has put them in the same conversation as Trampled by Turtles and Charlie Parr, and they've toured enough to share stages with Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Yonder Mountain String Band and Steve Martin. NPR's Mountain Stage described their work as a "Midwestern stamp on Appalachian sounds," A Prairie Home Companion called them "a force on the Minnesota roots music scene and beyond," and 89.3 The Current described their live shows as "a frenzied string shredding spree."
Outside of their own playing, they've had a hand in the broader regional scene. In 2015, they helped launch the Blue Ox Music Festival, which they still host and curate every June in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. This show brings them back to the Mainroom at First Avenue, which has been the epicenter of Minneapolis live music since 1970.
