Monthly variety open mic with stand-up, poetry, singing, dancing, juggling and magic, on the fourth Sunday of every month.
New Words is a variety open mic that runs on the fourth Sunday of every month at the Black Forest Inn, 1 E 26th St, Minneapolis, MN 55404. It's an open-mic night that leans on an "anything goes" format, and that's not just a figure of speech. The stage is open to stand-up, poetry, prose, singing, dancing, juggling, magic, or even teaching the audience how to knit. Each act gets five minutes, so the night moves through a lot of ground in a single sitting.
Because the format is so wide open, you'll likely see a few completely different things back-to-back. A poet might be followed by a singer, who's followed by someone doing a magic trick, who's followed by a stand-up comic. It's the kind of night where you don't know what's coming next, and the variety is the whole point. If you've got something you've been working on—whether it's a new song, a few pages of a story, or a weird skill you've never shown in public—this is a place to put it in front of people.

Elliott Askari books the night, and since it's an open mic, the lineup depends on who shows up. If you want to perform, there are two ways to get on the list: you can message newwordsopenmic on Instagram, or you can sign up in person at the venue after 5 PM. The night starts at 5:30 PM on the fourth Sunday of every month, so if you're signing up in person, you'll want to be there early to get your name down before things get underway.
