New York jazz trio New Jazz Underground, known for its hip-hop and swing-influenced sound, returns to Berlin after two sold-out shows.
New Jazz Underground are back at Berlin Music and Performance Lab in Minneapolis on Friday, January 8, and Saturday, January 9, 2027. The New York-based trio last played here in April, when they sold out two shows, so they're returning to a room that already knows them.
If you haven't come across them yet, they're a jazz trio that built its following through the internet. The three met as students at The Juilliard School and started playing in New York City parks during the 2020 lockdown. Their sound mixes traditional jazz and swing with hip-hop, house, and Afro-Cuban influences, and they've gained a following through living-room videos like "they can hate but we still swingin'," "fck/sit/c*it/jazz," and "sad boy jazz." They're also known for their suites on MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar, which have racked up views online.
The lineup is Abdias Armenteros on saxophone and compositions, Sebastian Rios on bass, and TJ Reddick on drums. Beyond the trio, Reddick and Rios have worked as sidemen for Jon Batiste, Sullivan Fortner, and Emmet Cohen, and the group has played New York venues including Dizzy's Club and Birdland. They also made a guest appearance on the YouTube series Live at Emmet's Place.
