Live show by Cape Verdean singer Neuza, who plays talaia baxo and rabolo, at the Dakota Jazz Club.
Neuza plays the Dakota Jazz Club on Tuesday, October 20, at 7 PM. She's a singer from Cabo Verde, and her sound is built on talaia baxo and rabolo, the rhythms native to the volcanic island of Fogo.
There's a personal story behind the voice. Neuza is the daughter of a singer who died of cancer when she was five, and she was discovered when her restaurant co-workers overheard her singing. Her 2014 debut album, Flor Di Bila, brought her international attention, with her YouTube videos clocking up millions of views. In 2020, she released the single "No Cancer" to promote the founding of her Izilda Foundation, which supports families affected by the disease. She splits her time between the US and Cabo Verde and has toured Europe, playing South by Southwest and the Lowell Folk festival. Afropop Worldwide described her voice as "a soothing voice that is gently persuasive... [that] exudes joy."
