Concert by Cuban pianist Nachito Herrera, blending classical technique with Afro-Cuban music, at The Dakota on Nicollet Mall.
Nachito Herrera plays The Dakota on Thursday, October 29, as part of his tour of concerts at the venue. The Cuban pianist is the sole bill for the night, so the whole set is his.
If you're not familiar with his work, Herrera is known for blending classical piano technique with contemporary and Afro-Cuban musical traditions. He's a musician who sits right at the intersection of those worlds, and he's spent a good deal of his career working with Cubanismo and the Afro-Cuban All Stars. If you've spent any time with Buena Vista Social Club, Irakere, Ray Barretto or Chucho Valdés, you'll recognize the lineage he's drawing from. It's that same Cuban piano tradition—rooted in the classical—meeting the rhythms and phrasing of the island's dance and jazz scenes.
The venue is The Dakota, at 1010 Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. It's one of the few spots in the Twin Cities that pairs a full, chef-driven menu with world-class music performances, so it's a place where you can make a meal out of the evening rather than just grabbing a drink and a seat. If you're coming from out of town or just want to make a night of it, that's a nice thing to keep in mind.
