Maddie Thies, Twin Cities bassist and singer, headlines The Cedar to celebrate the release of her debut EP.
Maddie Thies headlines The Cedar Cultural Center on Friday, December 11, with Squinny, The Nunnery, and Sachi Keiko opening. The show celebrates the release of her debut EP, so it's a night built around her new material.
Thies is a Twin Cities bassist and backing vocalist who grew up as a Third Culture Kid between Seoul and Minneapolis. She first picked up the electric bass in the fifth grade after a first-grade conductor, Pat Kelly, spotted her as a bass player. Since then, she's worked her way through the local scene: she was a 2021-22 Cedar Cultural Commissions Winner and played First Avenue's Rock Lottery in the summer of 2024. Her single "Postcard Collection" earned her international recognition and was named one of 89.3 The Current's January 2023 "Music You Should Know." The Loring Collective named her 2025's Upcoming Artist of the Year.
She describes her sound as art rock, indie art alternative, and cinematic, lush singer-songwriter. The influences she cites run from Black Belt Eagle Scout and Emma Ruth Rundle to Florence + the Machine, Boards of Canada, and Hiatus Kaiyote—a mix that pulls from atmospheric indie, heavy textures, and soulful, rhythmic arrangements. The set will center on the debut EP she's celebrating.
