Live concert by Cabo Verdean singer Lucibela, who carries on the legacy of Cesária Évora, at the Dakota Jazz Club.
Lucibela plays the Dakota Jazz Club on Tuesday, October 20, at 7 PM. She's a singer from Cabo Verde, and this is part of her tour, with a St Louis stop to follow.
Lucibela was born in 1986 on the island of São Nicolau, and she's been singing since she was a child. Her voice grew out of morna and coladera, the two traditional styles of Cabo Verdean music. She joined a band in high school and later spent time singing in the hotels of Boa Vista, where she worked through the songs of great Cabo Verdean singers like Cesária Évora, Titina, and Bana.
In 2012 she moved to Praia, and it didn't take long for her to make a name for herself in the city's music venues. She broke through at the 2017 Atlantic Music Expo, which led to invitations to perform in Belgium and Lisbon. In Lisbon she recorded her debut album with producer Toy Vieira, who was Cesária Évora's musical director, and she's spoken about wanting to carry on the diva's legacy. She's also connected to Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente—a town with a long history of sailors from Brazil, Cuba, England, and Portugal bringing their own musical traditions with them.
