Late-night DJ set by Intellephunk resident Lauryn Lesley blending dub reggae, bass, UKG and trip-hop at Berlin in Minneapolis.
Lauryn Lesley takes over Berlin on Friday, October 23, for a late-night DJ set that runs from 10:30 PM into the early hours of Saturday morning. The night is part of the Twin Cities late-night jazz series, and Lesley is an Intellephunk resident.
What she's bringing is a pitched-down, heady experiment that pulls from '70s dub reggae, left-field bass, dark UKG and jazz, all held together by lush trip-hop undertones. It's a wide reach for one set, but that's how she works. She's a regular at The Great Beyond festival, and she's built her sound around soulful psychedelia, weaving together deep roots music, experimental bass, psych rock, Detroit techno, cosmic disco and atmospheric jungle. If you've caught her before, you know the rangeβone minute it's deep roots, the next it's leaning into the more electronic side of things.
That eclectic streak goes back further than her DJing. She grew up in jazz lounges and big band concert halls, tagging along to her parents' performances in a household of two music teachers. It's the kind of background that makes a wide-reaching set like this feel natural rather than random; the jazz and the big band stuff are in the DNA, and the electronic textures are what she's built on top of them.
