Awa Mally, aka The Mayor, blends African sounds, Afrobeats, Francophone music and zouk in a late-night set at Berlin, part of the monthly Witching Hour series.
Awa Mally aka The Mayor plays Berlin on Saturday, October 17, as part of the Late Night Lounge. She's a DJ who builds her sets from the materials of her Togolese upbringing: her father's burned CDs, her brothers' hip-hop records, and her own internet-era favorites. The result blends cultures, genres, and eras into something playful and nostalgic, taking listeners through Africa's soundscape with old-school tracks, Afrobeats, Francophone sounds, and zouk.
The night is part of Witching Hour, a monthly series presented by Madeleine Melloy (Mudd) and Sylvia Jennings. The series takes its name from the surreal hours of the night, and the format follows suit: the curators play DJ sets while a live act interprets the mood and Moqui Joy adds live projections.
Both curators come from the city's music scene. Melloy is a Minneapolis DJ and record collector whose moniker nods to the Mudd Club and 80s downtown New York dance haunts; she mixes ethereal synth pop with new wave, house, and disco. Jennings began curating as a DJ at Radio K, hosted Off the Record and Clashed Attitudes, and worked in music promotion for The Current and the electronic-goth series Dark Energy before stepping behind the decks herself.
