Weekly Monday residency of Arthur 'L.A.' Buckner on drums with The Homework House Band, blending jazz, Gospel, hip hop and avant-funk.
Arthur L.A. Buckner is back at Icehouse on Monday, November 16, as part of his L.A.'s Monday Nights residency. It's one of several dates he's running through the end of the year, so if you can't make this one, there are more on November 30, December 7, 14, 21, and 28.
Buckner is on drums, backed by The Homework House Band: Omar Abdulkarim on trumpet and flugelhorn, Ethan Yeshaya on bass, and Kevin Gamble on keyboards. They're joined by special guests sitting in on vocals, horns, and other instruments, so the lineup shifts a bit from night to night. The music pulls from jazz, Gospel, hip hop, and avant-funk, and the whole thing is set up as a residency rather than an open mic, with audience activities and games to get the room involved.
Buckner is a performing musician, teaching artist, and producer from the Northside of Minneapolis. He holds a Master's in Percussion Performance from McNally Smith College of Music and teaches as a professor of Race & Identity at the University of Minnesota. He also co-hosts Sound Field, the award-winning PBS music education YouTube series. In 2020, he released BiG HOMiE, which hit the #1 Jazz position on iTunes within 24 hours, and the Minnesota Music Education Association named him 2024 Music Educator of the Year.
