Jazz concert by saxophonist Kenny Garrett and his band, with the show 'Sounds from the Ancestors', at The Dakota.
Kenny Garrett plays The Dakota on Sunday, November 1, at 8 PM. He's performing Sounds from the Ancestors, a program that brings his tenor sax to the center of the night.
Garrett is a Detroit-born saxophonist who grew up in the music; his father was also a tenor player. He got his start in 1978 with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, then led by Mercer Ellington, and later played in the Mel Lewis Orchestra and the Dannie Richmond Quartet. He stepped out as a leader in 1984 with Introducing Kenny Garrett, and he's put out 11 albums since, picking up several Grammy nominations along the way. Over the years he's shared the stage with Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, and Pharoah Sanders.
His playing is often described as strong and melodic, with a distinct Asian influence that came through on his 2006 recording Beyond the Wall. He's widely considered one of the top jazz saxophonists of the current era, and Sounds from the Ancestors is the set he's bringing to the city.
