Jazz vibraphonist Jason Marsalis leads a quartet through two lively sets of music by Ellis Marsalis and Brian Wilson.
Jason Marsalis brings his quartet to Berlin on Saturday, Oct. 17, for two sets of music. He's on vibraphone, and he's playing with a Twin Cities band: Kavyesh Kaviraj on piano, Dan Carpel on bass, and Abinnet Berhanu on drums. The program pulls from two very different sources — the work of Ellis Marsalis and the songs of Brian Wilson.
Marsalis comes from one of jazz's most famous families, and that connection is right there in the setlist. Ellis Marsalis was a pianist, composer, and educator who spent decades shaping the New Orleans jazz scene, and Jason's quartet will be working through his music. The other half of the night shifts to Brian Wilson, the mastermind behind the Beach Boys, whose pop songwriting has long been a favorite for jazz musicians to reinterpret. Hearing those two names in the same evening gives you a good sense of where the night is headed: one side rooted in the jazz tradition, the other in the melodic pop of the California coast.
Marsalis leads the quartet through two lively sets, and he's doing it with local musicians rather than a touring group. Kaviraj, Carpel, and Berhanu are all well-known names in the Twin Cities scene, so the band is built from people who play together around town. The vibraphone takes the lead, and the piano, bass, and drums round it out into a full quartet sound.
