Jake Xerxes Fussell, folk artist from Durham, returns to Minneapolis to play The Parkway Theater and support his album 'The Old Beloved Path'.
Jake Xerxes Fussell returns to The Parkway Theater on Wednesday, March 10, 2027, as part of his tour for the new album, The Old Beloved Path. He's a folk artist based in Durham, North Carolina, and this is his first Minneapolis date since his last run through the city.
Across six studio albums, Fussell has made a career of reimagining traditional folk music. He doesn't just cover old songs; he re-orchestrates them, often pairing them with unexpected companions. The album's first single, "Rock Island Line," is a good example: he takes the classic and marries it to an old English nursery rhyme. It's that kind of reworking that defines his approach—taking something familiar and shifting it into something new.
He's an accomplished fingerpicker on guitar with a smooth baritone voice, and critics from NPR's Ann Powers to The New Yorker and The Guardian have cited him as a leading interpreter of American folk. That connection to the tradition runs deep: he grew up in a community devoted to storytelling, log cabin building, and basketmaking. His father is a folklorist, writer, painter, and photographer, and his mother is an innovative fiber artist. It's a background that puts the music in context—the storytelling and the hand-crafted nature of the work are part of the family trade.
