Cory Grindberg's new jazz quartet featuring fast tempos, slap bass, and unstructured improvisation.
Hired Goons play Icehouse on Wednesday, November 4. It's the new jazz quartet of Minneapolis musician Cory Grindberg, who also goes by Letmode. He put the group together early in 2026, and they've described the sound as fast tempos, slap bass, quirkily beautiful melodies, unstructured improvisation, and a good time. The lineup is Grindberg on electric bass, Jake Baldwin on trumpet, Toivo Hannigan on guitar, and Miguel Hurtado on drums.
Grindberg's path to this quartet is a long one. He picked up the bass in high school, played locally with the Dakota Combo and MYJB, and studied jazz at Northwestern University. From there, he moved into beat-making in Chicago alongside @daedaePIVOT, working with Saba, Lizzo (with GRRRL PARTY), P.O.S, Student1, Bobby Raps, and many others. He also produced music for children's books, commercials, and TV shows like Abbott Elementary and Desus and Mero. After deciding to abandon recorded music, he left Los Angeles for Minneapolis and began composing for a jazz trio. Hired Goons is the next step after that.
