Hipshaker, the Minneapolis heavy funk and rare soul 45s dance party, plays The Zen Arcade on a Friday night.
Hipshaker returns to The Zen Arcade on Friday, December 18, for another night of heavy funk and rare soul. It's a dance party built around the 45rpm format, with DJs Brian Engel, Greg Waletski and George Rodriguez spinning 7-inch records for a dancing crowd. The night has been running since 2002 and has long held its place in the Minneapolis scene.
If you're not familiar with the 45s thing, it's a specific way of DJing: the set is played from original 7-inch vinyl singles rather than full-length albums or digital files. That format is at the heart of the night, and the music stays in that heavy funk and rare soul pocket throughout. It's a dance party first and foremost, so the room is set up for people to get on the floor rather than just stand and listen.
