Swedish jazz singer and multi-instrumentalist Gunhild Carling plays The Dakota with her Carling Big Band.
Gunhild Carling plays The Dakota on Saturday, December 5, at 7 PM. She's a Swedish multi-instrumentalist and jazz singer, and her whole act is built around the instruments she can play. That list is long: trumpet, trombone, harmonica, oboe, harp, flute, recorder, and jazz bagpipe. She rounds it off with juggling and tap dancing, and the finale has her playing three trumpets at once.
It's a lot to fit into one set, but that's exactly the point. The show is as much about the variety of the instruments as it is about the music. She's played with her own Carling Big Band, including a performance at the Royal Palace in Stockholm for King Carl XVI Gustaf's Ruby Jubilee, and she also performs with Postmodern Jukebox. Critics have described her as a "shimmering presence" who plays with "vivacious flair and boldness."
Outside the music, she's spent some time in the spotlight on television. She competed as a celebrity dancer on Let's Dance in 2014 and finished third, then appeared on Sweden's Got Talent in 2017 and America's Got Talent in 2019. Between the big band dates, the TV appearances, and the multi-instrumental act, there's a good bit of ground to cover before she even hits the stage.
