A night celebrating the life and music of Fela Kuti, with Obi Original & the Black Atlantics leading an all-star Afrobeat celebration.
Obi Original & the Black Atlantics are taking over Icehouse on Sunday, October 18, for Fela Night 2026, a celebration of Fela Kuti's 88th birthday. The night is built around Kuti's life and music, and the Black Atlantics are leading an all-star Afrobeat celebration that brings together a good stretch of the Twin Cities' music scene.
Kuti was the Father of Afrobeat, the pioneer who took the rhythms, spirit and cultural traditions of West African Highlife and brought them to audiences around the world. This particular night marks his 88th birthday, and it's billed as part of a weekly residency at Icehouse, so it's one of several Afrobeat nights the venue is hosting. The occasion gathers some of the city's finest musicians for a single, all-star celebration.
Obi Original & the Black Atlantics are the core of the bill, but they're joined by a long list of special guests: Stokley, L.A. Buckner, Ernest Bisong, Mitch Sigurdson, Thomas Abban, Cody DeLuc and Brotha Ase. There are also special surprise guests on the books, so the lineup will grow once the show gets underway.
