Artist lecture in which Suzanne Bocanegra feeds scripted lines to actor Lili Taylor, staging a theatrical essay on American rural utopia and urban imagination.
Suzanne Bocanegra brings Farmhouse Whorehouse to the Walker Art Center theater from January 7 to 9, 2027. It's an artist lecture in her signature style: Bocanegra feeds scripted lines through an earpiece to an onstage orator, and for this one, that orator is actor Lili Taylor, whom you might know from Mystic Pizza and Six Feet Under.
The whole thing starts on a small farm across the street from the Chicken Ranch, better known as The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, the musical and film that took the name. The farm belonged to Bocanegra's grandparents. From there, she and Taylor build a theatrical essay that plays with American notions of rural utopia and urban imagination, using historical footage, a PowerPoint, and a good deal of wit to hold it together. It's less of a lecture in the traditional sense and more of a performance built around the act of speaking.
Farmhouse Whorehouse is part of Suzanne Bocanegra: Intersections, a three-part portrait of the artist presented for the Walker's 2026-27 Performing Arts Season. It also falls under Out There, the Center's winter season that pushes toward the outermost reaches of contemporary performance. Program support comes from the Martha Gabbert Women Artists Fund, the David and Leni Moore Family Foundation, and the Serendipitous Leverage Fund.
