Free early evening jazz night with the Nancy Bierma Trio playing songs by Jarrett, Shorter and Metheny at Berlin.
Nancy Bierma leads her jazz trio at Berlin on Friday, October 23, starting at 4:30 PM. It's an early evening set, so it's the kind of thing you can catch before dinner rather than something that keeps you out half the night.
The set is built around the work of three heavyweights: Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter, and Pat Metheny. If those names are familiar, you know the territory. Jarrett brings the lyrical, improvisational side of the piano; Shorter, the saxophone's most restless and inventive mind; and Metheny, the melodic, atmospheric guitar that's defined so much of modern jazz. Hearing them all in one evening gives you a good cross-section of the jazz tradition, from the more structured compositions to the open-ended playing that lets a trio really stretch out.
Bierma is the pianist leading the group, so the piano sits at the center of the sound. With Shorter and Metheny in the mix, the program pulls from a few different directions—Shorter's compositions often have a strong, driving sense of melody, while Metheny's work tends toward the more expansive and atmospheric. Jarrett's influence usually shows up in the way the trio handles the space between the notes, leaving room for the music to breathe and change as it goes.
