Live music by Davina and The Vagabonds at The Dakota, a Minneapolis soul and blues quintet.
Davina and The Vagabonds play The Dakota on Thursday, November 26, at 7 PM. It's a home-city show for the Minneapolis quintet, fronted by vocalist and pianist Davina Sowers, whose voice and stage presence have drawn comparisons to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop.
Their sound is built around Sowers' keyboard playing, upright bass, drums and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. It draws on New Orleans, Memphis soul and the American Songbook, and has taken the group to festivals across North America and Europe, including the 2012 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival.
Sowers released her first full-length album of original material, Black Cloud, in 2011. The Minneapolis Star & Tribune named it one of the ten best releases of the year, and Downbeat Magazine gave it 4 1/2 stars. Her 2014 follow-up, Sunshine, reached number 13 on the Billboard Blues Chart and landed the band a feature on the BBC's Later... with Jools Holland.
