Record release event for Charlie Parr's album Rooming House, with two full sets of music including a retrospective of his catalog.
Charlie Parr is playing the State Theatre on Friday, October 30, for a release show celebrating his new album, Rooming House. He's not coming alone—Dave King, of The Bad Plus and Happy Apple, is joining him on stage. The night is presented by Hennepin Arts.
It's a two-set show. In the first set, Parr plays Rooming House in its entirety, so you'll hear the new record from start to finish. The second set is a retrospective of his catalog, pulling from the records that came before. Rooming House follows Last of the Better Days Ahead (2021) and Little Sun (2024).
For those who haven't kept up, Parr is a Duluth-based folk troubadour, guitarist, and interpreter of traditional music. He's put out twenty albums over two and a half decades and is known for playing up to 275 shows a year. Rolling Stone called his music "a gritty blend of Delta blues and Depression-era roots music soaked in his hardscrabble voice," and NPR praised his resonator guitar and soul-puncturing lyrics. He's played the Newport Folk Fest and Pickathon, and he's been described as an "incorruptible outsider" who writes novelistic, multi-layered stories. He's also famously stayed in the cold grey north of Minnesota rather than moving to LA or Nashville.
