Jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd, an NEA Jazz Master and Jazz Hall of Famer, plays The Dakota with Bill Frisell, Larry Grenadier and Kweku Sumbry.
Charles Lloyd is bringing his quartet to The Dakota on Sunday, November 15, at 5 PM. It's a heavy-hitting lineup: Lloyd on saxophone, Bill Frisell on guitar, Larry Grenadier on bass, and Kweku Sumbry on drums. If you've followed Lloyd's work, you know he doesn't just put together a random group; this is a specific, seasoned ensemble.
Lloyd is a Santa Barbara native and an NEA Jazz Master, a recipient of the French Chevalier des Arts et Lettres, and a member of the Jazz Hall of Fame. He's coming off a huge 2024, when Down Beat critics named him Artist of the Year, Saxophonist of the Year, and gave him Album of the Year. The critics have a few ways of describing him: Jazzwise called him "one of the greats, rather like Joan Miro in modern art," and Carlos Santana called him "an international treasure."
He's not alone up there. Bill Frisell is one of the most distinctive guitarists in jazz, known for a sound that often blurs the line between jazz, folk, and Americana. Larry Grenadier is a long-time bassist for some of the biggest names in the business, and Kweku Sumbry rounds out the rhythm section on drums. Together they make the Charles Lloyd Quartet, and they'll be playing as a full group.
