The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society recreates two American vampire stories as vintage radio broadcasts, with period commercials and live sound effects.
The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society returns to Crooners Supper Club on Friday, October 23, with a show they've titled Bloody Pulp: Vampires in America. It's a double bill of American vampire stories, performed as old-time radio recreations in the style of vintage broadcasts, complete with period commercials and live sound effects. The Society's voices do the heavy lifting here, painting the scenes so you can see the action in your mind's eye.
If you haven't caught them before, the group stages its shows as homages to a bygone era of radio, and they've been at it for a while. They performed their first recreation in 2016 at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in Minneapolis and have since played the Minnesota Fringe Festival, Daleko Arts in New Prague, the Wabasha Street Caves in Saint Paul, and The Phipps Center in Hudson. They held a monthly slot at the James J. Hill Center from 2017 to 2019 and at Park Square Theatre in Saint Paul from 2020 to 2022; these days they play every other month at Crooners. The creators also run a podcast of the same name.
For Bloody Pulp, the stage will be held by veteran Twin Cities performers Shanan Custer, Joshua English Scrimshaw, Tim Uren, and Eric Webster. They describe the Society's work as an entertaining and creepy homage to that old radio style, and this particular night leans into the vampire theme with two stories set across the American landscape.
