Concert by the internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble Windborne, part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series.
Windborne play The Cedar Cultural Center on Tuesday, October 20, as part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series. The group consists of Lynn Rowan, Will Rowan, Lauren Breunig, and Jeremy Carter-Gordon.
They're a vocal ensemble known for moving between very different styles of traditional music within a single concert, and they've spent twenty years studying polyphonic music from around the world. Their repertoire is rooted in Anglo and European songs of social justice, alongside the American singing traditions they've embodied since childhood. They've been described as one of the most exciting vocal groups of their generation, praised for the purity of their voices and the attention to detail in their arrangements.
What sets them apart is that they don't just sing the music—they talk about it, too. Between songs, they tell stories about the material and explain the characteristics of the traditions they're singing, so you walk away with a better sense of where the songs come from. The performance is part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series, which fits the venue's broader mission: The Cedar Cultural Center is a Twin Cities listening room dedicated to promoting intercultural appreciation and understanding through global music and dance. It's located in Cedar Riverside, one of the city's most prolific live-music neighborhoods and home to the largest Somali diaspora in the US, and it hosts over 100 musicians from around the world each year.
