Concert by the Tuvan throat singing ensemble Alash, part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series.
Alash play The Cedar Cultural Center on Thursday, February 4, 2027. The evening is part of The Cedar's Global Roots Series, which brings in artists from around the world for a single night in Minneapolis.
Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing, or xöömei, a technique that lets a singer produce multiple pitches at the same time. They've been trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood at Kyzyl Arts College, and they've spent their careers working within that tradition while pulling in outside influences. They bring in complex harmonies, Western instruments, and contemporary song forms, and they describe it as keeping the Tuvan spirit intact even as the sound changes.
They first toured the United States under the Library of Congress's OpenWorld Leadership program and the National Endowment for the Arts, and The Washington Post called their music "utterly stunning." Since then, they've collaborated across genres: they worked with the Sun Ra Arkestra, appeared on Béla Fleck & the Flecktones' Grammy-winning album Jingle All the Way in 2008, joined Chicago's Fifth House Ensemble for Sonic Meditations, and contributed to the soundtrack of the video game The Pathless. Beyond the stage, they teach Tuvan music to students of all ages.
