World premiere of a new work by the Minneapolis duo WHITEBOYSUMMER, blending jazz, gospel, hip hop and avant-funk, within the Recomposing America project.
WHITEBOYSUMMER are playing The Cedar Cultural Center on Saturday, April 10, 2027, from 8 PM to 10 PM. The night is a world premiere of a new work, and it's presented by the American Composers Forum as part of their Recomposing America project, which commissions new music and fosters public dialogue around artistic perspectives unique to the United States and the broader Americas, timed with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
WHITEBOYSUMMER is the duo of drummer Arthur 'L.A.' Buckner and guitarist Thomas Abban. They describe their work as exploring the entire spectrum of the African diaspora, drawing on the soul-stirring melodies of Nina Simone and Howlin' Wolf as well as the innovative productions of Ye West and Lee Scratch Perry. The premiere will bring that range to the stage with drums, guitar, piano, sampling, DJing, singing, and rapping.
Buckner is a performing musician, teaching artist, and producer from the Northside of Minneapolis. He holds a Master's in Percussion Performance from McNally Smith College of Music, co-hosts the award-winning PBS music education YouTube series Sound Field, and is a Professor of Race & Identity at the University of Minnesota. His own compositions blend jazz, gospel, hip hop, and avant-funk.
