The New York-based Allison Philips Quartet performs live jazz music from their release Make it Better at the Berlin venue in Minneapolis.
The Allison Philips Quartet plays Berlin on Wednesday, October 21, from 7 PM to 9:30 PM. The New York-based group is touring their release Make it Better, and the set is built around it.
Philips leads on trumpet, and the rest of the quartet fills out the sound: Isaac Levien on bass, Connor Parks on drums, and Neta Ranaan on saxophone. They describe their approach as balancing warm, resolute melodies with adventurous improvisation, and that's a good way to frame what they do — the melodies hold the center, and the improvisation works around them rather than taking over. The Minneapolis date is one stop on a short run of shows across the Midwest, so it's one of a few chances to catch them this far west.
Back in New York, the quartet plays regularly at The Pocket in Manhattan with The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, pretty much every Tuesday. That's their home base, and this run is their time away from it. Between the trumpet and the saxophone, there's a lot of horn work to lead the way, with the bass and drums keeping things grounded. If you've heard Make it Better, this is the chance to hear it live; if you haven't, it's a good place to start.
