Bluegrass banjo virtuoso Alison Brown and her quintet play The Dakota on Nicollet Mall.
Alison Brown plays The Dakota on Tuesday, November 10, at 7 PM. She's a banjo virtuoso who blends bluegrass with jazz and pop influences, and she'll be performing with the Alison Brown Quintet.
Brown first stepped into the national spotlight in 1989 when Alison Krauss asked her to join Union Station. That came after years of playing with fiddler Stuart Duncan and taking first place at the Canadian National Banjo Championship—a win that earned her a one-night gig at the Grand Ole Opry. The International Bluegrass Music Association named her Banjo Player of the Year in 1991, and her solo debut, Simple Pleasures, went on to a GRAMMY nomination.
Beyond the stage, she's spent decades building a home for other artists. In 1995, she co-founded Compass Records with her husband, Garry West; the Nashville-based label has since been called by Billboard "one of the greatest independent labels."
