18-piece big band ACME Jazz Company, with vocalist Arne Fogel singing Cole Porter and other Great American Songbook standards.
ACME Jazz Company plays Crooners Supper Club on Saturday, October 24, with vocalist Arne Fogel taking the lead. It's an 18-piece big band built around the Great American Songbook, and this particular set focuses on Cole Porter.
Fogel is a familiar name in the local scene, a 2018 Minnesota Music Hall of Fame and 2008 Mid-America Music Hall of Fame inductee who once opened for Rosemary Clooney at Orchestra Hall. Behind him is saxophonist Bob Parsons, the band's music director and arranger. Parsons is a St. James, Minnesota native who earned an M.A. in composition from the University of Minnesota before moving to New York City in 1991. There, he wrote and produced for major-label projects, jingles, and film scores, and provided in-studio arrangements for Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, John Scofield, and the Brecker Brothers. His charts shape the band's eclectic repertoire.
Crooners presents the night and describes itself as a listening room that balances good times with reverence for musicians. They also note that every merchandise purchase helps keep their doors open and sustain the local scene.
