A musical stage adaptation of the award-winning children's book, featuring beautiful puppets and catchy tunes, suitable for the whole family.
The Littlest Yak comes to HOME from Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29 October, a musical stage adaptation of the award-winning children's book by Lu Fraser and Kate Hindley. It's an uplifting tale of self-acceptance told with puppets and original tunes, and it's built for the whole family.
The story follows Gertie, a yak with the curliest, whirliest wool and the grippiest of hooves, who's in a rush to grow up and be just like the Big Yaks, only to discover there are some things only a Gertie can do. The production is staged by LAStheatre, a Kent-based social enterprise, and they describe it as a dazzling adventure into the heart of the Himalayas and a rollicking, heart-warming piece for all ages.
There's a fair bit of craft behind it. Barra Collins wrote the book and lyrics and directed the show, Joseph Hardy composed the music, and Alison Alexander handled the set, costume and puppet design. It's also picked up some recognition along the way, with four OffWestEnd Award nominations for Best Performance, Writing, Music and Design. The development was a collaborative process: the company ran 'Yakety Yak', a pen-pal project pairing children in Folkestone with Himalayan yaks, and toured early versions to libraries across Hampshire before this reached the stage.
