Musical Jeezus! by Alpaqa, part of the Rewrites season, with a 15-minute preview of a new musical each night.
Alpaqa bring their musical Jeezus! to The Lowry from 27 to 30 October, with performances at 7:30 pm each evening. It's the headline show of the venue's Rewrites season, and each night starts with a 15-minute preview of a new musical, so you get a bit of work-in-progress before the main event.
Jeezus! is set in 1990s Peru under the dictatorship of Alberto Fujimori. It follows Jesús, an altar boy and the son of a general in the regime, who starts feeling something unholy towards the figure on the cross. From there it runs as a sinful musical comedy, mixing live tunes and dark humour, and it's written as a way for writer and performer Sergio Antonio Maggiolo to exorcise the childhood trauma of growing up queer in conservative Catholic Latin America. The score ranges from Lloyd Webber-style balladry to Peruvian folk, and the show is billed as the unlikely lovechild of Bo Burnham, Bad Bunny and Bertolt Brecht.
On stage, Sergio Antonio Maggiolo plays Jesús, and Guido García Lueches plays nearly everyone else. It's directed and co-created by Laura Killeen. The show comes from Alpaqa, an award-winning, migrant-led company whose press release opens with 'Jesus fucking Christ!'. It's not new to the stage, though: it won the 2025 Untapped Award and a spot in The Stage's Fringe Five, and it returns here with new songs. It was once a 'curtain raiser' itself, and now it headlines the season.
