A grime-theatre show from Manchester Hypes exploring hyperactivity, ADHD and creativity, with post-show discussion and party.
Manchester Hypes brings his new grime-theatre show, The Treatment, to Contact Theatre on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October, both nights starting at 8pm. Hypes is a godfather of the northern grime scene, founder of Burst Gang and a regular on BBC Radio 1Xtra and RinseFM, and this one draws directly from his own life. It traces his journey from growing up in Moss Side through to an adult diagnosis of ADHD and his decision to step off medication, and he frames the whole thing as part gig, part live theatre.
A series of theatrically staged grime tracks tell the story: childhood hyperactivity, youth-club rap battles and his father's influence, with crashing beats fused to projected visuals. The show is set in the waiting room on the day of his adult diagnosis, so the music and the memories play out around that one moment. He's joined on stage by director Matt Fenton, dramaturg Reece Williams, digital animator Andrew Crofts, producer Yussuf Maleem and visual artist Audrey Albert, and by the young MCs he's mentored.
