The London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paavo Järvi with Benjamin Grosvenor at the piano, performs Beethoven, Shostakovich and Veljo Tormis.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra are at The Bridgewater Hall on Saturday 20 February 2027, starting at 3.00pm. It's a matinee, so you'll be out in the afternoon rather than late into the evening. The concert is part of the hall's International Concert Series and its Beethoven 200 series, which was launched to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer's death.
Conducting is Paavo Järvi, the LPO's incoming Chief Conductor, and he opens with Overture No.2 by his fellow Estonian Veljo Tormis — a work rarely heard in British concert halls. After that, the orchestra takes on Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5, the 'Emperor', with Benjamin Grosvenor on piano. The second half is Shostakovich's Symphony No.10, widely regarded as a musical portrait of life under Stalin.
If you're planning to make a day of it, The Bridgewater Hall runs an Afternoon Tea Experience in The Lounge both before the concert and during the interval. It's a good way to stretch your legs and have a proper break between the two halves.
