The Hallé Orchestra perform Chopin's Piano Concerto No.1 with Tianyao Lyu and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5, conducted by Kahchun Wong.
The Hallé are back at The Bridgewater Hall with two performances of the same programme: Thursday 29 October at 7.30pm and Sunday 1 November at 4pm. Kahchun Wong is conducting, and the night pairs Chopin's Piano Concerto No.1 with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5.
Chopin wrote the concerto when he was just 20, and he described it as 'a kind of reverie in the moonlight on a beautiful spring evening'—that gives you a fair idea of the mood it's aiming for. It's the first half of the evening, and the second is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5, a big, passionate work. The second movement is built around a horn melody that's hard to forget once you've heard it, and the third is a waltzing movement that brings back the composer's ballet music. Between the two, you get a night that moves from that quiet, moonlight feeling of the Chopin to the full-orchestra scale of the Tchaikovsky.
On piano is Tianyao Lyu, who's making her debut with the Hallé. She's coming off a strong showing at the most recent International Chopin Piano Competition, and she's known for a natural command of the keyboard and a strong stage presence. This is her first time out with the orchestra, so the Chopin concerto is her introduction to the Hallé audience.
