The BBC Philharmonic perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, with Eun Sun Kim conducting, Daniel Müller-Schott on cello and Caroline Shaw on piano.
The BBC Philharmonic are at The Bridgewater Hall on Saturday 13 February 2027, with Eun Sun Kim conducting her debut with the orchestra. It's part of the hall's Beethoven 200 series and the Philharmonic's 2026/27 season, and the programme is built around Joseph Haydn, the 'Father of the Symphony'.
Things open with Entr'acte (12 mins) by Caroline Shaw, who wrote it after hearing the Brentano Quartet play Haydn's Op. 77 String Quartet No. 2. She describes the way such minuets 'suddenly take you to the other side of Alice's looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, Technicolour transition'. Then comes Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major (23 mins), with Daniel Müller-Schott on cello; it's Haydn's first cello concerto, and it looks back to the Baroque concerto grosso form. There's an interval before the second half: Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 (30 mins), a classical masterclass built from that unmistakable four-note motif. The programme notes quote Beethoven saying, 'I never learnt anything from Haydn'.
It's a night that puts Haydn's influence on the symphony front and centre, with Shaw's contemporary response to him and Beethoven's Fifth following on. The full line-up is the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Eun Sun Kim, with Daniel Müller-Schott on cello and Caroline Shaw on piano.
