The film Love Actually is presented live in concert with a full orchestra playing the score live-to-film, including covers of Mariah Carey and the Troggs.
Love Actually In Concert comes to The Bridgewater Hall on Tuesday 15 December, the film projected onto a big screen with a full orchestra playing the score live in the room. It's a live-to-film screening, so the music you hear isn't a recording — it's a whole orchestra performing along with the movie in real time.
For those who haven't seen it, Love Actually was written and directed by Richard Curtis and first released in 2003. It follows ten separate but interweaving stories of love around Christmas in contemporary London, with an all-star cast: Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Bill Nighy, Martine McCutcheon, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, Rowan Atkinson and Martin Freeman. The concert format hands the score over to a full live orchestra playing along with the film projected onto a huge screen, a pairing that's become an annual festive tradition and drawn numerous sold-out audiences in previous years.
The music was written by Golden Globe, BAFTA and Emmy-winning Scottish composer Craig Armstrong OBE, one of the UK's most recognised film composers. His score runs through the whole film, and it includes covers of Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' and the Troggs' 'Love Is All Around'. Hearing those played by a live orchestra rather than coming out of the speakers changes the whole feel of the thing.
