Free exhibition by photographer Tom Hunter and the V&A East Youth Collective drawing on the museum's collections and Hunter's archive to explore east London.
Tom Hunter Selects is on at V&A East Museum this weekend, running Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October. It's a capsule display in the Why We Make galleries on Level 1, co-curated by the east London photographer Tom Hunter and the V&A East Youth Collective (2023-24).
The display draws on the V&A's collections and Hunter's own personal archive to look at east London as the setting, subject and inspiration for his work — an area he's called home for more than 40 years. It's also a reflection on photography as a tool for documenting underrepresented communities, and the things that usually slip through the cracks of the official record.
There's a fair bit to see. You'll find cut-and-paste graphics by Peter Kennard, Jamie Reid (who did the Sex Pistols) and Gee Vaucher (who did Crass), alongside ephemera from local events like the first 'Carnival Against the Nazis' in Victoria Park in 1978, designed by David King, and the M11 Link Road protests of the 1990s. Work by photographers Dorothea Lange and Paul Trevor sits in with it all.

It's part of a wider series: each year 'X Selects' invites two creative practitioners to put together their own capsule display in the Why We Make galleries at V&A East Museum, with this inaugural set responding to the season theme 'Making East London'.
The museum is at 107 Carpenters Rd, London, E20 2AR, and the display is free to see. It's open 10:00 to 17:30 on both Saturday and Sunday, and it closes on Sunday 18 October.
