World premiere improvised show by Zoo Co, directed by its founders, based on the true story of three men who lived on a billboard for 261 days.
Zoo Co are bringing Three Men On A Billboard to The Pit at the Barbican from Monday 8 February to Saturday 13 February 2027. It's the world premiere, and it's one of nine shows in the Barbican's spring season.
The show is built around a true story from 1982. At the height of an economic crisis, a small-town American radio station offered a mobile home to whoever could stay longest on a 30-foot billboard beside a motorway. The station reckoned they'd last a few weeks; three men stayed 261 days, turning a marketing wheeze into one of the country's strangest media sensations. Zoo Co founders Flo O'Mahony and Fleur Rooth team up with writer Jackson Used to bring it to the stage, and they live-direct the action each night with input from the audience, so nothing is fixed and the direction responds to the room. The pair's own decade-long creative partnership runs alongside as a second subject, and the production follows the company's award-winning Perfect Show for Rachel.
It's a live, improvised piece, so the night you see it won't be the same as the one someone else catches. BSL is integrated and all performances are Relaxed, with age guidance 14+. The production is presented with backing from Arts Council England, the Cockayne Foundation, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation.
