Callie Khouri reimagines her 1991 road movie as a musical with music and lyrics by Neko Case at the Young Vic.
Thelma & Louise: A New Musical runs at the Young Vic from 3 September to 24 October 2026, a strictly limited run with press night on Wednesday 16 September. It's a stage reimagining of the 1991 film, which won an Oscar and a Golden Globe and became a cultural landmark more than thirty years ago. The original screenwriter, Callie Khouri, wrote the book for this version — a project she'd long wanted to turn into a musical.
The story follows Louise, who invites her best friend Thelma on a spontaneous weekend getaway. After an ill-fated encounter with a stranger at a roadside honkytonk, their lifelong friendship becomes something dangerous and unbreakable, propelling them on a last-chance adventure. The music and lyrics come from Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Neko Case, with direction by Trip Cullman. The set is by Christine Jones and Brett J Banakis, and choreography by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber.
It's a co-production between the Young Vic, Sonia Friedman Productions, Blue Spruce Productions, Ley Line Entertainment, and Callie Khouri, in association with MGM ON STAGE. The show is recommended for ages 11 and over.
