English-language premiere of Christian Kracht's darkly comic road trip through the Swiss Alps, directed by Walter Meierjohann at the Young Vic.
Eurotrash opens at the Young Vic on Friday 13 November, running through to Saturday 9 January 2027. It's the English-language premiere of Christian Kracht's international best-seller, brought to the stage by a creative team that's worked together before.
The story follows a novelist stuck in writer's block who's summoned to Zurich by his aged mother. She's barely holding on with vodka, pills and Ferragamo sweaters, and wants him to give away the family fortune—wealth amassed from arms investments and dairy products. The two set off on a chaotic road trip through the snowy mountains and valleys of the Swiss Alps, and the journey unfolds as a darkly comic travelogue and a poignant search for redemption and connection, as they come to terms with their own and Europe's dark history.
On stage, Ben Whishaw and Kathryn Hunter take the lead, directed by Walter Meierjohann. Colin Teevan adapted the play from Kracht's novel, and Lizzie Clachan handled the sets and costumes. It's a reunion of the creative team behind the Young Vic's earlier hits Kafka's Monkey (2009) and The Emperor (2016), so there's a bit of history behind this one.
