Christmas ballet with Tchaikovsky's score played live by more than 100 dancers and musicians, set on Christmas Eve in Edwardian London.
The Nutcracker comes to the London Coliseum on Thursday 3 December, with Tchaikovsky's score performed live on the night. It's a big production, with more than 100 dancers and musicians on stage.
The story starts on Christmas Eve in Edwardian London. Clara Stahlbaum meets the eccentric toymaker Drosselmeyer and an enchanted Nutcracker doll at his Sweets & Delights Emporium, and after tasting a magical sugar plum, she's swept away to a winter realm ruled by the Ice Queen Isolde. From there she goes on to the Land of Sweets and Delights, where the Sugar Plum Fairy hosts a celebration of sweet-themed dances — turron and sahlab, tanghulu and liquorice allsorts among them.
It's a production that's caught the eye of the broadsheets. The Financial Times called it 'vibrant', The London Standard 'astoundingly pretty', and The Stage 'a real Christmas gift'. The Guardian summed it up as 'Wonka meets Mary Poppins', which gives you a fair idea of the tone: a bit of Edwardian charm meeting something much more colourful and imaginative.
