Agatha Christie's classic mystery play, the world's longest-running West End production, at St Martin's Theatre.
The Mousetrap is on at St Martin's Theatre on Wednesday 25 November, starting at 15:00. It's Agatha Christie's classic mystery, and if you've never seen it, it's the world's longest-running play. It first opened in London's West End in 1952 at the Ambassadors Theatre before moving to St Martin's in 1974, where it's stayed ever since.
The story is set in a remote English country-house hotel during a snowstorm. Seven strangers are trapped inside when Detective Sergeant Trotter arrives to find a guest dead, and the rest of the play is spent figuring out who among them is responsible. It's a proper whodunnit, and part of the tradition is that audiences are asked to keep the identity of the murderer a secret after they leave.
There's a bit of history behind it that's worth knowing. Christie didn't start it as a stage play; it began as a BBC radio play commissioned under the title Three Blind Mice for Queen Mary's 80th birthday. When it finally made it to the stage, Christie expected it to run for eight months at best. Instead, it's been going for over seven decades, with more than 450 actors and actresses taking the stage since opening night. There's even a long-standing rule that no movie adaptation can be made until six months after the play has closed in the West End — a moment that hasn't arrived yet.
