World premiere of the sexy horror rom-com play by Mei Leng Yew, directed by Ailin Conant and presented by New Earth Theatre at the Bush Theatre.
The Hungry Ghost is running at the Bush Theatre throughout October, from the 1st to the 31st. It's the world premiere of the debut play by Mei Leng Yew, a British writer of Malaysian-Chinese heritage, and it's being produced by New Earth Theatre in association with the Bush. It also marks the first full production under New Earth's new Artistic Director, Ailin Conant, who directs the piece.
Billed as a sexy horror rom-com, the story follows a young woman who moves into a new place with her partner, Naomi. She ignores her mother's warning that the night is the first of the ghost month and, in doing so, unwittingly invites a hungry ghost into her life. The play draws on Chinese supernatural beliefs to look at what takes root in the space between superstition and rationality, and the two leads — Mei Mac as The Girl and Isabella Wei as Ghost — play half a dozen characters each. Their physical comedy is compared to Chaplin's, and beneath the laughs is a warm, layered look at a southern Chinese household. The Guardian described it as veering between bright comedy and grotesque horror.
New Earth Theatre, which started in 1995 as Yellow Earth, is the UK's leading BESEA company. This is their first full production since Ailin Conant took over as Artistic Director, and it's their first time bringing a play to the world premiere stage.
