Soul night in which Wayne Hernandez, former session vocalist for Billy Ocean and Blur, leads a band through soul and funk classics.
Wayne Hernandez is playing Soul Mama Islington on Sunday 15 November, a soul night that was rescheduled from 20 September. He'll be fronting a tight backing band, and the set is built around soul and funk classics from Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, with a Bob Marley reggae track thrown in too.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, you've almost certainly heard his voice. Hernandez is a session vocalist who's worked with Billy Ocean, Blur, Tina Turner, Madonna, the Gorillaz, Tori Amos, Grover Washington, Roberta Flack and Rag'n'Bone Man, and has toured with Kool and the Gang and Regina Bell. He's of Afro-Cuban heritage and a long-time member of the London Community Gospel Choir and the Kingdom Choir, the latter of whom sang at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. He lived in New York for years, and describes his music as 'a living fusion of music styles from the Black music scene'.
It's a night of soul and funk classics, so you'll recognise the songs, but they're being sung by someone who's spent his career in the rooms with some of the biggest names in pop and soul. The set leans on Gaye and Mayfield, with that Marley track as a change of pace, and he's backed by a full band rather than just a track. The show was originally set for 20 September, so this is the new date.
