Live Afrobeat brunch with KoyeSax and The Fortune Collective and a selection of African-inspired dishes at Soul Mama Islington.
KoyeSax and The Fortune Collective bring their Afrobeats brunch to Soul Mama Islington on Saturday 14 November, with doors opening at 12:30pm and things running through until 6pm. It's a daytime one, so you're in and out well before the evening kicks in.
The format is pretty straightforward: live Afrobeats on the go while you eat, with a curated selection of African-inspired dishes to go with it. It's the kind of thing that works as a proper Saturday lunch, so you can spend the afternoon eating and listening rather than rushing through a set. The show was originally slated for Soul Mama Stratford, but it's moved over to the Islington site, so make sure you've got the right one in your head before you set off.
At the centre of it is KoyeSax, a Nigerian-born, UK-based saxophonist and multi-genre AfroJazz artist. He blends Afrobeats, Jazz, Soul and Highlife, and he's open about where he draws from: Fela Kuti and Lagbaja on the Afrobeat side, Yolanda Brown on the jazz, and Masego, Chris Brown and Kenny G for the soul and pop. He's also a producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays piano, guitar and drums, so there's a fair bit of musical ground he covers. The Fortune Collective rounds out the live side of things, and together they're what you'll be hearing across the afternoon.
