Provocative new play by Helen Edmundson, directed by Blanche McIntyre and starring Anne-Marie Duff, about a woman whose life is upended by a boy's random insult.
Some Woman is running at the Dorfman Theatre in the National Theatre on the South Bank, from Wednesday 7 October to Saturday 21 November 2026. It's a new play by Helen Edmundson, who wrote Small Island, and it's directed by Blanche McIntyre, who did Tartuffe.
Anne-Marie Duff, known for Bad Sisters, takes the lead as Julie Robson, a mother and working woman who's used to being overlooked at work and at home. Her life is turned on its head when an 11-year-old boy randomly and aggressively insults her on a tube station platform. It's a brief encounter that draws all eyes to her and lands her in a legal battle with the threat of prison. The play is staged without an interval and looks at everyday misogyny and a legal system rigged to distrust women. Stephen Wright plays the boy's father, and Grace Doherty and Hannah Onslow play Julie's daughters.
Before you book, there's a fair bit to be aware of. The show contains strong and misogynistic language, and references to violence, sexual assault, suicide, disordered eating and mental illness. It's also a production that's picked up an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award and support from the Huo Family Foundation.
