Free lunchtime recital of Joseph Horovitz's Sonatina, a Poupel nocturne and Brahms's Clarinet Sonata, by Sarah Williamson and Simon Callaghan at the Shaw Library.
Sarah Williamson and Simon Callaghan are playing at The Shaw Library on Thursday 29 October, as part of the LSE Arts Lunchtime Concert Series. It's a clarinet and piano duo, and the programme pulls from three different composers: Joseph Horovitz's Sonatina for clarinet and piano (1981), a Nocturne by Farhad Poupel, and Brahms's Clarinet Sonata in E flat, Op. 120 No. 2.
Williamson is a virtuoso clarinettist who's picked up some strong reviews over the years. BBC Music Magazine called her a tenacious player whose 'sonorous timbre and natural musicality speak for themselves', The Independent hailed her as a 'superb player', and The Telegraph noted her 'blend of languor and exuberance'. Callaghan works internationally as a soloist and chamber musician as well as a recording artist; his release of Bennett Concertos with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Martin Yates was a Gramophone Editors' Choice.
The recital is part of the LSE Arts Lunchtime Concert Series, which fills the Shaw Library on the sixth floor of the School's Old Building with free music every week. It's a bit of an odd one when you think about it: LSE doesn't teach arts or music, yet it runs a vibrant cultural side that includes these concerts, an LSE orchestra and choir with their own professional conductors, and numerous student societies.
