Free public event at the LSE marking the 20th anniversary of the Stern Review, with speakers Dr Miatta Fahnbulleh MP and Lord Nicholas Stern.
Lord Stern is back at the LSE campus on Wednesday 28 October, for a public event marking the 20th anniversary of The Economics of Climate Change: The Stern Review. He'll be joined by Dr Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, with Elizabeth Robinson chairing the evening. It runs from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, and you can catch it either in person or online.
To get why this anniversary matters, you have to go back to 30 October 2006. That was when the Review was first published at the Royal Society, launched by Prime Minister Tony Blair, Chancellor Gordon Brown, Secretary of State David Miliband, and Nicholas Stern himself. Its central conclusion — that the cost of doing nothing about climate change far outweighs the cost of acting on it — shifted the global conversation on the economics of the environment. The evening is built around that: looking at what's happened since it came out, what's been learnt in the two decades since, and where we go from here.
The event is hosted by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, which was set up at the London School of Economics in 2008 and is funded by the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, alongside the LSE Global School of Sustainability. Lord Stern is the IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government, Chairman of the Grantham Research Institute, and Head of the India Observatory at LSE; he was also President of the British Academy from 2013 to 2017.
