Live concert by Zambian-born hip-hop and R&B artist Sampa The Great at the Blue Note Jazz Club in London.
Sampa The Great plays Blue Note Jazz Club on Wednesday 4 November, with the show starting at 7:00pm. It's a single-bill night, so she's the only act on the programme.
Sampa The Great, born Sampa Tembo, is a Zambian musician based in Sydney. She was born in Zambia and raised in Botswana, and she discovered hip-hop at an early age. She carries that upbringing and her life experience into lyrics that tackle political and societal imbalances. Her debut release, The Great Mixtape, was produced by fellow Sydney-sider Godriguez.
She describes music as the language of the soul, a tool that transcends borders and acts as an agent for positive change. That's a good way to frame what she does: hip-hop at its core, but with a political edge and a global reach that fits the jazz club setting. If you've come across her work before, you'll know the sound blends rap with jazz and soul, and this is a chance to hear it live in London.
