Exhibition by east London artist Sahra Hersi, bringing together V&A collection objects and her own archive in the V&A's X Selects series.
Sahra Hersi is showing at V&A East Museum through Sunday 8 November, as part of the V&A's X Selects series. Each year the museum invites two creative practitioners to put together their own capsule display in the Why We Make galleries; the inaugural ones worked around the theme Making East London.
Hersi is an east London artist and spatial designer who describes her practice as "caring about people, places, art & architecture in that order". She's trained in architecture and works across public installations, objects, print and community workshops. Her process starts on the ground: conversations with local residents, archival research and a close look at the surroundings let each project emerge organically rather than from a fixed blueprint. More recent work has grown to include ecological elements, making room for plant life and local habitats alongside community making. She also lectures at Goldsmiths, University of London.
For this display, she's brought together objects from the V&A collection and pieces from her own archive, held together by an introduction panel, object labels and an accompanying audio piece. It's a small-scale look at how her way of working — starting with the people and the place — plays out when she's digging into the museum's stores and her own records at the same time.
